Morning Baker: Signing at Bakeshop
Early in my career, a bright-eyed young woman sat across from me at the bar at Campanile, interviewing for a pastry externship. At the time, we were all clamoring for the chance to work with Nancy Silverton. As the pastry chef, I had seen many hopeful candidates—but Roxana stood out immediately. She was bold, confident, and carried a fire that made it clear: she was ready, and she wanted it.
During that first conversation, she spoke about her Costa Rican roots with such warmth and pride. Having just fallen in love with that country myself, it felt like a kind of fate. We went on to spend years side by side in the pastry kitchen.
Eventually, our paths diverged. Roxana went on to lead celebrated pastry programs across Los Angeles before opening Friends & Family, her beloved bakery and café, with her partner Dan (also a Campanile alum). Over the years, we stayed connected—texting about grains, croissant dough, and life.
Recently, after the heartbreaking loss of our dear friend and mentor, Christine Moore, we found our way back to a deeper connection. Christine taught us one of the most important lessons: we are stronger when we support one another. Showing up matters. When I returned to LA for her funeral, I was reminded how grounding and meaningful these early friendships are—the ones that hold pieces of who we are.
So it brings me immense joy to share this:
On Friday, April 10th from 9am–12pm, Bakeshop is welcoming Roxana Jullapat for a signing of her new book, Morning Baker. We are absolutely giddy.
Robin from Vivienne Culinary Books will be here with copies, and together with Roxana, the Bakeshop team will be baking pastries from the book for a special pre-order pastry box, including:
• Raspberry Fairy
• Brown Butter Salted Butter Scone
• Glazed Lemon Olive Oil Muffin
• Midnight Cookie
Roxana is the kind of baker who rises before dawn to pour her heart into her craft. Morning Baker invites us into that world—sharing the rituals, techniques, and recipes that define her mornings. She is also a fierce advocate for justice, a champion of farmers and millers, and someone who uses her voice with purpose.
In her own words:
“My goal in this cookbook is to provide you with the same toolkit I offer to those who come apprentice at Friends & Family…so you can be a morning baker in your own kitchen, at whatever hour you please.”
Come say hi, meet Roxana, and celebrate with us.
With love,
